Classroom Rollout Plan: Getting Students Onboard with PointWiseSystem

← Back to Blog

Before You Start

A smooth classroom rollout starts with a little planning. These three prep steps make all the difference.

  • Choose a low-stakes day — Don't launch on test day or the day before a field trip. Pick a regular Tuesday when the schedule is calm.
  • Decide on 3-5 behaviors first — You can always add more later. Starting small keeps things manageable for you and your students.
  • Prep a quick 5-minute intro — Students need to understand the "why" before the "how." Frame it as something fun, not another rule.

Step 1: Set Up Your Students

Adding students to PointWiseSystem is fast — even for a full class.

  1. Open PointWiseSystem and select the Education profile. This pre-loads classroom-friendly tasks and rewards.
  2. Tap Add Earner and enter each student's first name (or initials for privacy). You can use nicknames too.
  3. For larger classes, add students in batches — start with one table group and expand from there if you prefer a phased rollout.

Step 2: Pick 3-5 Starter Tasks

Focus on the behaviors that matter most in your classroom right now. Here are proven starters:

  • 📝 Complete assignment on time — 10 pts
  • 🙋 Participate in discussion — 8 pts
  • 🤝 Help a classmate — 10 pts
  • 👂 Follow directions the first time — 8 pts
  • 🌟 Excellent effort on work — 20 pts

Keep point values proportional to effort. Quick behaviors get fewer points; sustained effort earns more.

Step 3: Set Up Rewards

Classroom rewards work best in three tiers — something quick, something weekly, and something big to work toward together.

Small Rewards (daily wins)

  • ⭐ Pick a pencil from the prize box — 10 pts
  • ⭐ Sit in the teacher's chair for 10 min — 15 pts

Medium Rewards (weekly goals)

  • 🎯 Homework pass — 100 pts
  • 🎯 Extra recess — 120 pts

Big Rewards (class-wide motivation)

  • 🏆 Class pizza party — 600 pts (pooled)
  • 🏆 Movie afternoon — 500 pts (pooled)

💡 Tip: Pooled Rewards

Pooled rewards let the whole class contribute points toward a shared goal. This builds teamwork and peer encouragement — students start cheering each other on.

Step 4: Do a Practice Run

Before the system goes live, walk your class through it together.

  1. Project PointWiseSystem on the board and show students the task list. Explain what each behavior earns.
  2. Pick a volunteer and award them points for something they just did — raising their hand, sitting quietly. Let the class see the points land.
  3. Show the reward shop and let students vote on which big reward they want to work toward first.

💡 Tip

Use Kiosk Mode on a classroom tablet so students can see the leaderboard throughout the day. Visibility drives engagement.

Tips for the First Week

  • Award points generously at first — You want students to experience the reward cycle quickly. You can tighten up later.
  • Narrate what you're rewarding — "I'm giving Jayden 10 points for helping Maria" teaches the whole class what earns points.
  • Keep the reward shop visible — Post a printed list or keep it on the board so students always know what they're working toward.
  • Don't take points away — PointWiseSystem is built on positive reinforcement. Focus on earning, not losing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Too many tracked behaviors — Five is plenty for the first week. Adding more too soon makes it hard to keep up with awarding points.
  • Rewards that take too long to earn — If the cheapest reward takes a week, students lose interest. Keep a small reward within daily reach.
  • Inconsistent awarding — If you reward one student for helping but miss another, trust erodes. Set a routine for when you award points (end of each period, after group work, etc.).
