Family Coordination for Summer: Stop the Who's Doing What Arguments

← Back to Blog

The Core Problem

Everyone's home. The house gets messier faster. Nobody knows whose turn it is to unload the dishwasher. Somebody left wet towels on the floor again. The argument about screen time happens for the third time before noon.

Without a visible, agreed-upon system, "fair" becomes subjective. Every kid thinks they do more than their sibling. Every parent feels like they're the only one noticing the mess.

A point system makes contributions visible. Points don't argue. Points don't play favorites. Points just track who did what.

Summer-Specific Setup

  • Shared household tasks: Dishes, laundry folding, vacuuming common areas. Rotate daily. 3 points each.
  • Personal responsibility: Own room, own bathroom, own laundry in hamper. 2 points each.
  • Bonus contributions: Help with yard work, cook a meal, watch younger sibling for 30 min. 5 points.

Everyone can see the scoreboard. The kid who claims they "always" do everything can check. The kid who's been coasting gets a nudge from the numbers, not from you.

Rewards That Work in Summer

Extra screen time. Pool day with friends. Sleepover permission. Ice cream run. Movie night pick. These cost nothing (or close to it) but kids will work for them.

Set the exchange rate: 30 points = one reward pick. A full day of contributions earns 8-10 points. Three days of solid effort = something fun. Kids do that math quickly.

Start Before the Next Argument

The next time someone says "it's not my turn," that's your cue. Set up the system in 5 minutes, assign the tasks, and let the points settle the debate going forward.
