Before You Start
Camp is supposed to be fun — and a point system should make it more fun, not less. PointWiseSystem gives counselors a simple way to reward great behavior, run cabin competitions, and keep campers engaged all session long.
- Train counselors first — Before campers arrive, make sure every counselor knows how to award points and understands the system.
- Keep it positive — Camp is about building kids up. The system should reward good behavior, not punish bad behavior.
- Make it visible — Post a leaderboard in the dining hall or common area. Campers love seeing their cabin's score.
Step 1: Set Up Your Campers
You can set up campers individually or by cabin — whatever fits your camp's structure.
- Open PointWiseSystem and add each camper (or cabin group) as an earner. Use first names or cabin names like "Eagle Cabin" or "Cabin 7."
- If running a cabin competition, add each cabin as a single earner. Counselors award points to the cabin, and campers work together.
- For individual tracking, add each camper separately. This works well for smaller camps or specialty programs.
Step 2: Pick 3-5 Starter Tasks
Choose behaviors that reflect your camp values. Keep them simple enough that every camper can earn every day.
- 🛏️ Make bunk bed — 5 pts
- 🧹 Clean cabin — 10 pts
- ⏰ On time to activities — 5 pts
- 🤝 Help a younger camper — 12 pts
- 🏅 Good sportsmanship — 10 pts
Bonus points for standout moments — a camper who includes someone sitting alone at lunch, or one who volunteers to help clean up after an activity.
Step 3: Set Up Rewards
Camp rewards should feel special and camp-specific. Three tiers keep campers motivated from day one to the final campfire.
Small Rewards (daily wins)
- ⭐ First in line at the canteen — 10 pts
- ⭐ Extra free swim time — 15 pts
Medium Rewards (weekly goals)
- 🎯 Choose the evening activity — 80 pts
- 🎯 Sit at the counselor's table at dinner — 60 pts
Big Rewards (session-long motivation)
- 🏆 Cabin pizza party — 400 pts (pooled)
- 🏆 Camp Spirit Award at closing ceremony — most points earned
Step 4: Do a Practice Run
Introduce the system on the first day of camp during orientation or the first cabin meeting.
- Gather campers and explain the system in simple terms: "This summer, you earn points for being awesome. Points get you rewards."
- Award points to a few campers right away — "You helped carry bags to the cabin, that's 12 points!" — so everyone sees it's real.
- Show the reward list and let campers get excited about what they can earn. For cabin competitions, show the leaderboard.
💡 Tip
Use Kiosk Mode on a tablet in the dining hall or common area. Campers can check the leaderboard between activities, and it becomes a natural conversation starter.
Tips for the First Week
- Award points publicly and often — At meals, during activities, at campfire. The more visible the recognition, the more campers want to earn.
- Let every camper earn on day one — Make sure the tasks are achievable enough that nobody goes to bed on the first night with zero points.
- Empower counselors — Every counselor should be able to award points. The more adults reinforcing good behavior, the stronger the culture.
- Update the leaderboard daily — Stale scores kill momentum. Make the leaderboard update part of the evening routine.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Only rewarding the loudest campers — Quiet campers who make their bed every day and help without being asked deserve recognition too. Watch for the quiet wins.
- Taking points away — Never subtract points. If a camper misbehaves, handle it through normal camp discipline. The point system stays positive.
- Letting the system fade after week one — Camp sessions are short. Keep the energy up by announcing leaderboard standings at meals and awarding bonus points for special moments.
