Before You Start
Homeschooling already asks a lot of you. PointWiseSystem should make your day easier, not add another thing to manage. A little upfront planning goes a long way.
- Start on a Monday — Beginning of the week gives you a clean slate and a full week to build the habit.
- Involve your students — Let them help pick rewards. Ownership turns "Mom's system" into "our system."
- Match your curriculum — Think about the subjects and tasks you already track. PointWiseSystem just makes them visible and rewarding.
Step 1: Set Up Your Students
Whether you're homeschooling one child or four, setup is quick.
- Open PointWiseSystem and select the Homeschool profile. This loads curriculum-friendly task templates.
- Tap Add Earner and enter each student's name. Pick avatars together — it's a small thing that builds excitement.
- If you have students at different levels, don't worry — each earner has their own task list, so you can customize per child.
Step 2: Pick 3-5 Starter Tasks
Map your most important daily subjects to tasks. Keep it to the essentials for week one.
- 🔢 Complete math lesson — 15 pts
- 📖 Reading time (30 min) — 10 pts
- ✏️ Writing assignment — 12 pts
- 📚 Complete all subjects for the day — 20 pts
- 🌟 Extra credit or bonus work — 15 pts
Higher points for harder subjects keeps motivation balanced. If math is a struggle, make it worth more.
Step 3: Set Up Rewards
Homeschool rewards can blend learning perks with fun. Three tiers keep things interesting.
Small Rewards (daily wins)
- ⭐ 15 min free time between subjects — 15 pts
- ⭐ Pick today's read-aloud book — 10 pts
Medium Rewards (weekly goals)
- 🎯 Field trip to the library — 80 pts
- 🎯 Science experiment of their choice — 100 pts
Big Rewards (long-term motivation)
- 🏆 Educational game or book — 250 pts
- 🏆 Skip one subject for a day — 300 pts
Step 4: Do a Practice Run
Walk through the system together before the first real school day.
- Show your students the task list on PointWiseSystem. Let them read each task and see the point values.
- Complete one task together — a quick math worksheet or a reading session — and watch the points appear.
- Open the reward shop and let each student pick one reward they want to work toward this week.
💡 Tip
Use daily recurring tasks for core subjects. PointWiseSystem resets them each morning so you don't have to re-create anything — just check them off as you go.
Tips for the First Week
- Keep the tablet visible — Put PointWiseSystem on a tablet in your school area so students can see their progress all day.
- Award the bonus task generously — "Complete all subjects" is a big deal. Celebrate it when it happens.
- Adjust point values after the first week — If one subject always gets skipped, bump its points up. Let the data guide you.
- Don't stress about perfection — The goal is progress, not a flawless system on day one.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Tracking every single subject from day one — Start with 3-5 core tasks. You can add electives and extras in week two.
- Making rewards too hard to reach — If your student can't earn a small reward by the end of day one, the points feel meaningless. Calibrate accordingly.
- Using it as punishment — PointWiseSystem is about earning, not losing. Never take points away for bad behavior — just don't award them.
